Moose Hunts

GENERAL INFORMATION

Our moose hunts are a (7) day hunt in the national forest and wilderness areas of the famous Hoback Canyon region. You will call both our full-service hunting lodge and Bear Creek wilderness camp home for a week, located near Bondurant, Wyoming, which is approximately 30 miles south of Jackson Hole.

Our moose hunts are a combination stay at our hunting lodge, with full-service amenities, such as; comfortable beds, hot showers, pool table, full bar, fuse ball table, big screen television, and a few days in our high country wilderness camp located at 8500 ft. elevation in the Bridger Teton Wilderness.

During the wilderness hunts portion of your trip we will begin your adventure at the transition camp near the trailhead. At this location, you will receive an orientation on riding our horses and given an idea of what to expect as we ride into the Bear Creek Camp.

All of your gear will be placed on packhorses and we will begin an approximately two-hour horse ride through some of the most beautiful country Wyoming has to offer. Once we arrive in camp you will meet the guides and staff and be shown your wall tent, home for the next few days. Each tent is equipped with a wood stove to make our guest comfortable during colder weather. You will also be shown our cook tent, where you will be fed three wonderful meals a day, prepared by our western camp cook. Many of our meals are cooked Dutch oven style and can’t be beat.

All hunts are fair chase conducted on public lands in which we are permitted to operate guiding and outfitting services on.

Our moose hunting area (Area 21) contains thousands of acres of high country alpine land where there are good numbers of moose that can often be seen right from camp.

October is the month moose begin to rut and often can be found in small groups. We recommend either an early archery hunt in September or a late September/early October rifle hunt during the rut.

We have one guide for every moose hunter, and access the high mountain meadows and pine timber by riding horses that are accustom to riding mountain trails.

We use the spot and stalk method of hunting big bulls by finding them with powerful spotting scopes from high vantage points, then formulating a game plan for a stalk. Most shots will be less than 100 yards for moose. We recommend a .30 caliber rifle or larger to harvest a moose.

You will be served a brown bag style lunch during the day while hunting and a wonderful hot meal for breakfast and dinner each day at our comfortable and cozy western style camps. Our cooks like to get creative in the woods so you never know what they might dream up to tempt your taste buds. And of course…we always keep the coffee hot!

All of our guides are fun to hunt with and are very knowledgeable of the hunt areas.

Our guides will field-dress; cape and care for your animal after harvest and deliver you’re animal to a local meat processor and Hunters Taxidermy Shop in Alpine, Wyoming where you will receive discounted pricing on quality taxidermy work for hunting with BBO. However, you must make arrangements with each business for deposits they may require and shipping details. Our website has information about several local taxidermists and meat processors that you can make pre-hunting arrangements with.

Our rifle hunts begin September 10th and run through October 31st.

Moose rut later in the season and larger numbers can typically be seen starting around late September to early October. However, early season archery hunting for moose can make for a wonderful and exciting hunt during warmer weather.

We only take 5-6 hunters per week so book early for the best selection in hunting times.

HOW TO APPLY FOR A LICENSE IN THE
WYOMING GAME AND FISH DRAWING

We are licensed to guide and outfit in the following area:

  • Area 21 type 1 (bull)
  • Area 21 type 2 (cow moose).
  • Make sure you specify on the application which you would like to hunt, either bull or cow, but you can’t hunt both. Note- it takes less preference points to draw a cow than a bull. However, 25% of all tags are a random draw so you could possibly draw a bull or cow with no preference points accumulated.

You MUST apply on your Wyoming Game and Fish Department application for one of the above hunt areas/type before we can provide outfitting services to you.

Applications can be found on the WY Game and Fish Department website. There is a link to this website on our site and can be found in the “non-resident” section of the site. We are also happy to mail you the application and we will fill out the hunt areas and type for you. WY also has an online application process that is fast and simple to use. We recommend this method.

Moose licenses in Wyoming come in one form: limited quota for each particular hunt area. Before you can hunt, you must successfully draw a license in the WY Game and Fish Department drawing.

You MUST apply for a moose license between January 1st and February 28th in order to be placed in the drawing.

A moose license is $1213 as of 2007. Remember the area you need to apply for is “Area 21 type 1” to hunt a bull or “Area 21 type 2” to hunt a cow.
