Bear Basin Outfitters

Jackson Hole Wyoming

Equipment List

Congratulations, it’s almost time to start your hunting adventure!

Bear Basin Outfitters will supply the majority of the equipment you will need on your Wyoming hunting adventure, but we recommend you bring along with you the following items:

  1. A bolt action or semi-automatic rifle in at least .270 caliber if hunting deer or antelope and preferably a .30 caliber rifle if hunting elk, moose or bear.
  2. A variable power scope on your rifle. Some shots may be 200 yards and a 3-9 power scope is ideal. Also make sure your rifle has a good sling attached to it.
  3. At least one full box of shells, no more than two are necessary.
  4. A quality pair of binoculars. 10x42 power is best, but your guide will also be glassing for you if your binoculars are a lesser power. They will also have a range finder, but you are welcome to bring your own if you like.
  5. Warm clothing. Layering is best. Start with quality poly/cotton long underwear. Next add quality pair of hunting pants that are large enough to give you room to move. Wear a long sleeve shirt and medium weight jacket. For extreme cold weather add another layer of wool. I recommend either Sleeping Indian brand or Columbia brand wool clothing. Bring extra socks; you may want to change during the day to maintain comfort. Compact rain gear.
  6. You will need both a baseball style hat and a warm hat that covers your ears in cold weather. The brim on the baseball style hat will assist you in glassing for animals by deflecting the sun. Cowboy hats are sometimes popular, but not always practical. If you don’t normally wear one, skip it, it will just get in the way.
  7. A very good quality set of waterproof boots, with at least 400 grams of thinsulate. Gore-Tex is preferred, but an all leather boot will work as well. Your boot needs to fit into a stirrup, so don’t bring extremely large boots that you can not slip in and out of a stirrup easily in. Also bring a second pair of camp shoes that are comfortable. Hiking style boots work great.
  8. Warm gloves. I suggest you bring two pair. One leather and one insulted.
  9. Fanny style or small daypack in the event we do any walking. Please do not bring large backpacks; you only need something small to put basic items in.
  10. Headlamp and small flashlight. LED bulbs are best because they last longer. Spare batteries.
  11. You can bring a knife if you wish, but your guide will field dress all animals for you. A 4” blade is ideal. Small sharpener.
  12. A quality sleeping bag rated for 0 degree temperatures. A hollofill bag is ideal. If you’re buying a new bag, don’t skimp here; get the best you can afford. A small camp type pillow. DO NOT BRING FULL SIZE PILLOW.
  13. Hunter orange vest or hat is required by Wyoming law.
  14. Camera. A digital compact style is best.
  15. Other personal items you may desire such as a book, toothbrush etc.
  16. You are welcome to bring spirits to camp, but make sure they are in plastic bottles so they don’t break on the pack horse. If you’re bringing beer you are limited to no more than a 12 pack and it must be in cans. NO GLASS.
  17. Please try to limit your gear to around 50-60 pounds, as we will be packing in on horses and have limited space. Also please pack in several small duffle style bags. They pack on horses much easier than one large one.
  18. If you have any favorite snack food, please let us know in advance and I will make sure we have what ever it is you like in camp.
  19. Medium size water bottle than is leak proof. You will use this everyday and will become one of your most valued pieces of gear.
  20. Last but not least, come ready to have a lot of fun and see some spectacular country.

If it’s not on this list, we will be providing it for you, such as coffee cup, scabbard, food, spotting scope etc. Call if you have any questions. (307) 883-3186
